Why Are People Clicking My Google Ads but Not Calling?

GOOGLE ADS GETTING CLICKS BUT NO LEADS? HERE’S WHY

You have launched your Google Ads.

The campaign is spending money.

People are clicking the ads.

They are visiting your website.

But the phone is not ringing.

There are no quote requests coming through.

And nobody in the office can tell you where the leads are.

It is frustrating because you can see the clicks inside Google Ads. You know people are reaching the website, but they are disappearing without doing anything.

Before you decide that Google Ads does not work for tradies, you need to find out what is happening after the click.

The problem could be inside the Google Ads campaign.

It could be the page people are landing on.

It could be your offer, your website, your tracking or the way your team handles new enquiries.

Or it could be a combination of all of them.

Here are the most common reasons people click Google Ads without calling, submitting a form or becoming a lead.

CLICKS ARE NOT THE GOAL

A click is not a customer.

It is not a lead.

It is not a quote.

And it definitely is not a booked job.

A click simply means someone saw your ad and was interested enough to visit the website.

That person might be:

  • Ready to book now
  • Comparing several businesses
  • Researching the cost
  • Looking for a job
  • Searching for DIY information
  • Outside your service area
  • Looking for a service you do not provide
  • An existing customer
  • A supplier
  • A competitor

Google Ads can bring people to the door.

Your targeting, website, offer and sales process still need to turn the right visitors into enquiries.

1. THE WRONG PEOPLE ARE CLICKING YOUR ADS

The first thing to check is whether the campaign is attracting potential customers.

Your ads may be appearing for searches that sound relevant but have little chance of becoming a job.

For example, an electrician might receive clicks from people searching for:

  • Electrician jobs
  • Electrical apprenticeships
  • Electrician courses
  • DIY electrical repairs
  • Electrical supplies
  • Electrician licence information
  • Cheap electrician
  • Free electrical quote template
  • Electrician salary
  • How to become an electrician

A plumber might attract searches for:

  • Plumbing jobs
  • Plumbing supplies
  • DIY blocked drain fixes
  • Plumbing courses
  • Free plumbing advice
  • How to install a hot water system
  • Plumbing parts near me

These clicks still cost money.

But the people searching were never likely to call and book the business.

Your search terms should be reviewed regularly to see what people typed before clicking your ads.

If those searches do not represent potential customers, the targeting and negative keywords need work.

2. YOUR KEYWORDS ARE TOO BROAD

Broad keywords give Google more freedom to decide which searches are relevant.

That freedom can uncover good opportunities.

It can also generate a large amount of irrelevant traffic if the campaign does not have the right data and controls.

For example, targeting a broad term such as:

Electrician Sydney

Could potentially lead to clicks involving residential work, commercial work, job searches, training, products, salaries, DIY advice and suburbs you do not service.

The campaign needs enough structure to guide Google towards the work you want.

This may involve:

  • Separating services into different campaigns or ad groups
  • Adding negative keywords
  • Reviewing search terms
  • Using clear ad copy
  • Sending traffic to relevant service pages
  • Recording which enquiries become qualified leads
  • Feeding booked-job information back into the campaign

Broad targeting is not automatically bad.

Uncontrolled broad targeting is.

3. YOUR ADS ARE ATTRACTING CLICKS INSTEAD OF CUSTOMERS

Some ads are written to get attention.

Strong ads should also help qualify the customer.

An ad that says:

Best Electrician in Sydney. Fast Service. Call Today.

Does not tell the customer much.

Do you handle residential work?

Commercial maintenance?

Emergency call-outs?

Level 2 work?

Switchboard upgrades?

Do you service their suburb?

Are you available today?

The more generic the ad, the more generic the traffic can become.

Your ads should help the right customer recognise that your business provides the service they need.

For example:

Commercial Electricians Sydney
Maintenance, Fit-Outs and Faults
Speak With Our Commercial Team

This is much clearer than simply advertising “electrical services”.

The goal is not to get every person to click.

The goal is to get the right person to click.

4. YOUR AD PROMISES ONE THING AND THE WEBSITE SHOWS ANOTHER

The customer searches for emergency plumbing.

Your ad says:

Emergency Plumber Available Now

They click.

Then they land on a generic homepage talking about the company’s history, values and full range of services.

They cannot immediately see:

  • Emergency plumbing
  • Their suburb
  • Current availability
  • A phone number
  • A clear call button
  • What they should do next

So they go back to Google and click the next business.

This is called a message mismatch.

The advertisement creates a specific expectation, but the website fails to continue the conversation.

If the ad promotes blocked drain repairs, the customer should land on a blocked drain page.

If the ad promotes commercial electrical maintenance, the customer should land on a commercial maintenance page.

If the ad promotes ducted air conditioning, the customer should not land on a generic heating and cooling homepage.

The landing page should immediately confirm:

Yes, you are in the right place. We provide the service you searched for in your area. Here is what to do next.

5. YOU ARE SENDING EVERYONE TO THE HOMEPAGE

Your homepage has an important job.

But it is not always the best landing page for paid advertising.

A homepage normally needs to introduce the entire business.

It may talk about:

  • Several services
  • Different customer types
  • Multiple service areas
  • The company story
  • The team
  • Reviews
  • Accreditations
  • Recent projects

That is a lot for someone to process.

A dedicated landing page can focus on one customer, one problem and one action.

For example:

  • Emergency electrician North Sydney
  • Commercial plumber Sydney
  • Ducted air conditioning installation
  • Level 2 electrician
  • Blocked drain repairs
  • Switchboard upgrades
  • Commercial HVAC maintenance

The more closely the page matches the customer’s search, the easier it is for them to understand the next step.

Do not make paid visitors dig through your website to find the service they already searched for.

6. YOUR WEBSITE DOES NOT LOOK TRUSTWORTHY

Customers make fast decisions online.

They do not know how skilled your technicians are.

They do not know that your team does great work.

They do not know that most of your customers come through referrals.

They can only judge what they see.

If the website looks outdated, empty or unprofessional, the customer may assume the business is the same.

Common trust problems include:

  • Blurry photos
  • Generic stock images
  • Broken pages
  • Old copyright dates
  • Spelling mistakes
  • No team photos
  • No project photos
  • No reviews
  • No licence details
  • No accreditations
  • No physical location
  • No clear service area
  • Forms that do not work
  • A design that looks poor on mobile

The customer does not need the world’s fanciest website.

They need enough confidence to make contact.

Your website should show that you are a real, established and capable trade business.

7. YOU HAVE NO PROOF

Every trade business says it is reliable, professional and experienced.

Customers have heard those claims before.

What evidence can they see?

Your landing page should include trust signals such as:

  • Google reviews
  • Customer testimonials
  • Before and after photos
  • Real project photos
  • Photos of the team
  • Branded vehicles
  • Trade licences
  • Industry memberships
  • Manufacturer accreditations
  • Case studies
  • Years of experience
  • The number of customers or projects completed
  • Guarantees you genuinely provide
