Hey, crew. In this video, I’m going to show you the two key pathways that every tradie or builder takes in order to either move their business forward or to stay the same.
Every tradie that comes into our door, basically, they all sing the same song. They talk about feast and famine and you, too, might be at home thinking about the feast and famine of running a trade or building business or the feast or famine of work and how you are either dining on the most beautiful lobster and there’s a full on course there or you’ve got basically a piece of bread.
The only way to truly get out of that feast and famine hold or barrier is that you actually need to start driving leads into your business. Now, that sounds simple enough, right? But the two pathways are quite simple. You either stay on your word of mouth business and you continue to ask your existing network, no matter how big or small it is. Most of my tradies, when they come to us, they’re probably working with three or four different builders and they’re trying to get as much work out of those lead sources. That’s typical word of mouth and that drives feast or famine because your entire business is waiting for those other people to send you work.
The other pathway that I want you to consider is lead generation or digital marketing. Now, I know it’s a faffy marketing word, but I like to keep it plain and simple. Basically, it means Google and you are best mates. Google has people using it every single day searching for someone just like you. Now, there are hundreds of searches every single day, many more than what your few referral partners are giving you. If you work on your website, which is the foundation for everything that you do in your business, if you work on your website and get it to connect and talk with Google, then it’ll start to actually generate leads.
You’re going to need to work hard on your website. You’re going to need to work smart, you’re going to need to put some pages in place, so that Google clearly understands exactly what you do. Again, most tradies or builders come to us and they’ve just got a home page, a services page and about page, a contact page, and maybe a gallery. That’s not enough content for Google to see that you’re the expert in the space.
Big tip here, what I want you to do is think about the one thing that of everything that you can do, what is the one thing that you’re going to market and lean in with? Now, even as us, digital marketers, there are thousands of things that we could offer. Logos and SEO marketing and PPC marketing and just website building or website con. I mean, there is that many things that market is doing just like builders and tradies, but you want to lean in on one core service that you know you can deliver like that.
Now, when you do that, you then put a digital marketing plan in place so that you just talk about this one thing. If you’re doing kitchen renovations, but often enough you’re doing the entire house, but you know that the conversation starts with a kitchen renovation, then go all in on kitchen renovations because if you can market yourself as an expert kitchen renovations builder, let’s say, then people will be Googling that. They’ll find you and once you get in the sales process, you can then also talk about the other elements of your business and what you can offer.
I hope that was a quick tip and it has helped you move forward just that little bit. Feast and famine or feast or famine is a legit thin. As a tradie or builder, you literally need to go right.
